Drug Take-Back Day for East Haddam Residents

The Resident Troopers and East Haddam Police will be collecting potentially dangerous expired, unused, and unwanted prescription drugs for destruction at the River House, 7 Main Street, East Haddam, (today) Saturday, April 27, 2013 from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.
The service is free and anonymous, no questions asked.
This initiative addresses a vital public safety and public health issue.  Many Americans are not aware that medications that languish in home cabinets are highly susceptible to diversion, misuse, and abuse.
Rates of prescription drug abuse in the U.S. are increasing at alarming rates, as are the number of accidental poisonings and overdoses due to these drugs.  Studies show that a majority of abused prescription drugs are obtained from family and friends, including from the home medicine cabinet.
In addition, many Americans do not know how to properly dispose of their unused medicine, often flushing them down the toilet or throwing them away - both potential safety and health hazards.

Crime Watch Program Available to East Haddam Residents

On February 26, 2013 the East Haddam Police/Resident Troopers Office in Conjunction with the East Haddam Local Prevention Council sponsored a meeting for residents interested in starting a Crime Watch Program in their neighborhood.

The meeting was attended by over 30 residents representing several neighborhoods throughout the East Haddam and Moodus area.

The Neighborhood Watch program is one of the oldest and most effective crime prevention programs in the country, bringing citizens together with law enforcement to deter crime and make the community safer.

The purpose of the Neighborhood Watch program is to make residents aware of the steps they can take to make their homes more secure against crime.

The program shows neighbors how they can help each other protect their entire neighborhood, and to make local law enforcement more effective in the fight against crime through involvement and participation of the residents.

Residents and police work together to achieve one common goal – "Making their neighborhoods safe." Residents are taught how to protect their property and report suspicious activities to the police.

Additionally, residents get to meet their neighbors and watch out for each other, working together towards a common goal.

Trooper Jeff Rhoades and Officer Craig Mansfield presented an overview of the East Haddam Neighborhood Crime Watch program and discussed the next steps for starting up programs in their own neighborhoods. Residents were asked to go back to their neighborhoods and coordinate a time and place for a first meeting.

Once a meeting date is set, police will attend the meeting to listen to resident’s concerns specific to their neighborhood and provide specific training that will assist residents in securing their homes and neighborhoods.

Anyone who was unable to attend the meeting and is interested in setting up a program in their neighborhood can contact Trooper Rhoades or Officer Mansfield via email at police@easthaddam.org or by calling 860-873-1226.
