Criminal Mischief, Larceny, Motor-Vehicle Vs. School Bus, Driving Under the Influence of Alcohol and/or Drugs and Traveling Too Fast for Conditions through 3-27-15


The East Haddam Police and the Connecticut State Police, Troop K in Colchester report the following incidents:

TWO-CAR MOTOR-VEHICLE ACCIDENT - On March 10 at approximately 3:03 p.m., Helen Carr, 58, of Cedar Meadow Road, Moodus was traveling southbound on Route 151 (Town Street) in Moodus, driving a 2003 Honda Pilot, and was stopped to turn left into the Chestelm Rehabilitation Center. A 17-year-old driver of Shanaghan Road, East Haddam was traveling behind Carr, operating a 1998 Volkswagen New Beetle, and police said that the she struck Carr's vehicle from the rear. The 17-year-old driver and her 16-year-old passenger reportedly sustained minor injuries as a result of the air bags deploying. Police issued the 17-year-old a written warning for Following Too Close.

MOTOR-VEHICLE VS. SCHOOL BUS - On March 11 at approximately 8:28 a.m., Kimberlee Lake, 44, of Plains Road, Moodus was traveling along Bashan Road in East Haddam, operating a 2013 Chevy G-3500 school bus, just north of Lakeside Drive. Shea Jezek, 63, of Lakeside Drive, East Haddam was stopped at the intersection of Lakeside Drive and Bashan Road, in a BMW 328-xiT wagon. Police said that as Jezek attempted to turn onto Bashan Road, she impacted the school bus, causing minor damage to both vehicles. No injuries were reported by either drivers, or the children that were passengers on the bus at the time. Police issued Jezek a written warning for Making an Unsafe Start from a Stopped Position.

LARCENY - On March 19 at approximately 2:40 p.m., Theodore Robida III, 22, of Sims Lane, East Haddam turned himself in to Troop K based on an outstanding warrant for his arrest for 3rd-Degree Larceny. Robida was held on a $3,500 bond and scheduled to appear at Middletown Superior Court on 3/20/15.

TRAVELING TOO FAST FOR CONDITIONS - On March 20 at approximately 8:09 p.m., Scott Chapin, 30, of Country Club Road, Groton was traveling westbound on Route 82 (Norwich Road) in East Haddam, driving a 2006 Chevy Aveo. Police said that as Chapin was traveling downhill, attempting to negotiate a left curve prior to Hem Street, he lost control of his vehicle on the snow-covered roadway and collided with a utility pole on the right shoulder. Minor damage was caused to the pole and vehicle. No injuries were reported, but police issued Chapin an infraction for Traveling Too Fast for Conditions.

DRIVING UNDER THE INFLUENCE OF ALCOHOL AND/OR DRUGS, FAILURE TO DRIVE UPON THE RIGHT AND FAILURE TO CARRY AN INSURANCE CARD - On March 22 at approximately 7:25 p.m., State Police were called to investigate a one-car motor-vehicle accident that took place on Newberry Road in East Haddam. Police said that Richard Betts, 43, of Newberry Road, East Haddam had crossed the double-yellow line with his vehicle and subsequently struck the metal beam guardrails on the opposite side of the road. Upon further investigation, Betts was placed into custody and charged with the above violations. The vehicle had to be towed from the scene. He was later released on a $500 bond and given a court date of 4/8/15 at Middletown Superior Court.

CRIMINAL MISCHIEF - On March 26 at approximately 8:38 p.m., East Haddam Police responded to a complaint of property damage at Brownell & Company on East Haddam-Moodus Road in Moodus. The incident is under investigation, and anyone with possible information is asked to contact Corporal Karl Karabeinikoff at the East Haddam Resident Troopers' Office at 860-891-8201. LARCENY - On March 27 at approximately 7:14 a.m., a resident of Tater Hill Road in East Haddam reported the theft of (2) full 5-gallon gas cans that had been left outside their home, and discovered missing on the evening of Thursday, March 26th. The case is under investigation, and anyone that may have seen anything suspicious is asked to contact Corporal Karl Karabeinikoff at the East Haddam Resident Troopers' Office at 860-891-8201. Strangulation, Unlawful Restraint, Threatening, Assault, Larceny, Possession of Narcotics, Breach of Peace, MVA's and Interfering with an Emergency Call through 3-12-15


The East Haddam Police and the Connecticut State Police, Troop K in Colchester report the following incidents:

FAILURE TO DRIVE UPON THE RIGHT - On Feb. 16 at approximately 10:39 a.m., Donald Mathieu, 60, of Ballahack Road, East Haddam was traveling westbound on the East Haddam-Colchester Turnpike in Moodus, driving a 2009 Chevy Silverado pick-up truck. Police said that Mathieu struck an unoccupied 2010 Buick Lucerne on the vehicle's front, left-hand side. No injuries were reported, but the unoccupied vehicle required towing. Police issued Mathieu a written-warning for Failure to Drive Upon the Right.

DISORDERLY CONDUCT, INTERFERING WITH AN EMERGENCY CALL, ASSAULT, STRANGULATION AND UNLAWFUL RESTRAINT - On Feb. 21 at approximately 2:33 a.m., Alexei Carter, 45, of Cherry Swamp Road, Moodus was arrested and charged with Disorderly Conduct, Interfering with an Emergency Call, 3rd-Degree Assault, 2nd-Degree Strangulation and 2nd-Degree Unlawful Restraint. Carter was released on a $50,000 bond and scheduled to appear at Middletown Superior Court on 2/23/15.

OBJECT VS. MOTOR-VEHICLE - On March 3 at approximately 1:18 p.m., James Papallo, 58, of Allen avenue, Meriden was traveling westbound on Route 82 (Norwich Road) in East Haddam, operating a 2011 Freightliner M2 liquor delivery truck, in the area of Creek Row. Mario Lopes, 31, of Nash Road, New Bedford, MA. was traveling behind the truck in a 2012 Jeep Liberty, when a 1/4 keg container fell from the truck and struck the front end of his vehicle. No injuries were reported. Police issued Papallo a written warning for Failure to Secure a Load.

POSSESSION OF NARCOTICS - On March 7 at approximately 8:42 p.m., Gerald J. Tuttle, 27, of Sarah Baker Road, East Haddam was arrested by West Hartford Police and charged with Illegal Possession of Narcotics. Tuttle was released on a $5,000 bond and scheduled to appear at Hartford Superior Court on 3/19/15.

BREACH OF PEACE, THREATENING AND HARASSMENT - On March 9 at approximately 10:30 a.m., Christopher Smith, 23, of Cedar Lake Drive, Haddam was turned over by State Police, Troop F from Westbrook for warrant servicing. Smith was transported to Troop K in Colchester to be processed, and charged with Breach of Peace, 2nd-Degree Threatening and 2nd-Degree Harassment. He was released on a $2,500 bond and given a court date of 3/24/15 at Middletown Superior Court.

LARCENY - On March 12 at approximately 7:30 a.m., Christopher Moore, 41, of Alger Road, East Haddam was arrested, based on an outstanding warrant and charged with 1st-Degree Larceny. Moore was held on a $50,000 bond and appeared at Norwich Superior Court on the same day.
