STATE POLICE PLAN 2014 HOLIDAY ENFORCEMENT

The Connecticut State Police has launched the 2014 Holiday enforcement program in an attempt to save lives and prevent injury as the Christmas/New Year’s holiday season approaches. 

Operation S.A.N.T.A. S-top A-nother N-eedless T-ragic A-ccident is the major holiday accident and injury prevention message from the Connecticut State Police.

This combined accident reduction effort (C.A.R.E.) involves all State Police Departments across the U.S. The focus of this enforcement will be on the drivers behavior that most frequently causes accidents. Enforcement will also attempt to rid the roads and highways of drivers who will drive under the influence, speed, and fail to wear seatbelts.

DUI enforcement will increase dramatically during this holiday season. Traditionally at this time of year, many holiday celebrations such as house and office parties take place. 

Many of these parties MAY include the consumption of alcohol. Some partygoers will not designate a non-drinking driver and will neglect to remember that mixing alcohol with driving any motor vehicle is unwise, dangerous and illegal.  

State Police Troopers have scheduled DUI sobriety checkpoints and enhanced DUI enforcement operations on the roads and highways all across Connecticut.

Emergency Services & Public Protection Commissioner Dora Schriro said, “Our State Troopers are trying to save lives and keep all of our roads and highways safe. Remember mixing alcohol with driving any vehicle is a dangerous combination for everyone, and illegal in our State.”

No one looks forward to spending time in a jail cell, a hospital, or someplace worse during the holidays. Connecticut State Troopers will be out in force to try to keep drunk drivers off the roads.

Troopers are asking the public to join our effort, if you are planning to consume alcohol at a festive event, make plans in advance for a non-drinking driver to bring you home. 

If you spot a suspected drunk driver, call 911 and report it to the police, as this is a true emergency.

Distracted driving, cell phone use, speeding and not wearing seat belts will be an important part of “OPERATION SANTA” 2014 enforcement. These violations all contribute to the cause of accidents. Troopers are asking all motorists to obey the laws and help the Connecticut State Police keep all roads and highways safe.

Troopers observed a high traffic volume over the 2014 Christmas holiday. This State Police enforcement effort will continue as we approach the New Year’s Eve Holiday Celebration. Troopers will continue to conduct enforcement patrols throughout the state on both highways and secondary roads.

In addition, sobriety checkpoints will also be set up in an effort to deter anyone from the consumption of alcohol and driving as we approach and celebrate the New Year.

Drive-By Malware, Phishing, Vishing & Phone Scams

A senior citizen from Haddam recently reported that he was victim of a cyber scam, and was accused of viewing child pornography. His computer was locked with an attached false message demanding payment.

   

The Federal Bureau of Investigation website described the scam as "drive-by malware" because unlike many viruses—which activate when users open a file or attachment—this one can install itself when users simply click on a compromised website. 

Once infected, the victim's computer immediately locks, and the monitor displays a screen stating there has been a violation of federal law.

The bogus message goes on to say that the user’s Internet address was identified by the FBI or the Department of Justice’s Computer Crime and Intellectual Property Section as having been associated with child pornography sites or other illegal online activity. 

To unlock their machines, users are instructed that they are required to pay a fine using a prepaid money card service.

"Phishing" is a form of Internet fraud that utilizes spoofed e-mails to lead the recipient to a false website. The false website is designed to trick the recipient into disclosing financial information such as credit card numbers, account usernames, passwords and social security numbers.

"Vishing", also known as "voice" phishing over the phone, is the practice of criminals whose main intent is to collect sensitive or personal information through the use of the telephone. This type of scam usually involves a spoofed (false) telephone number that appears to be a legitimate company. If you are ever in doubt of the call, hang up and call the business back using their main line and not the one they provide you.

An East Haddam resident recently reported receiving several repeat phone calls from a person claiming to be a representative from the telephone/internet company, offering to correct some recent problems that had been reported, related to the resident's internet service.

The caller went on to request that the resident would need to turn on their computer for further instructions.

The number, as it was registered on the resident's Caller ID, as 254-784-5226, was only identified as a "Wireless Caller".

An internet search on this particular phone number revealed further activity of the same nature, as reported on the following website:

Bullet Into Residence, Criminal Trespass, Burglary, Larceny, Forgery, DUI and Speeding through 12-1-14

The East Haddam Police and the Connecticut State Police, Troop K in Colchester report the following incidents:

CRIMINAL TRESPASS AND DISORDERLY CONDUCT - On Nov. 16 at approximately 6:01 a.m., Thomas Kabara, 31, of East Haddam-Moodus Road, Moodus was arrested by East Hampton Police and charged with 2nd-Degree Criminal Trespass and 2nd-Degree Disorderly Conduct. Kabara was released on a $500 bond with a Promise to Appear and scheduled to appear at Middletown Superior Court on 11/25/14.

BURGLARY, LARCENY, FORGERY AND ILLEGAL USE OF A CREDIT CARD - On Nov. 17 at approximately 6:45 a.m., Sarah Peckham, 41, of Babcock Road, East Haddam was arrested, based on an active warrant, and charged with 3rd-Degree Burglary, 3rd-Degree Larceny, 3rd-Degree Forgery and Illegal Use of a Credit Card. Peckham was held on a $100,000 bond and scheduled to appear at Middletown Superior Court on the same day.

BULLET INTO RESIDENCE - On Nov. 18 at approximately 4:05 p.m., East Haddam Police were dispatched to investigate a complaint at a home on East Shore Drive, in the Lake Hayward section of East Haddam. A window had been shattered, and a .22 caliber bullet was discovered inside the dwelling. According to police, the bullet had entered through a window located on the lower level of the house and impacted a cabinet before bouncing off and landing in an empty dog bed on the floor. The homeowner was upstairs at the time of the incident. No injuries were reported, and the case is under investigation. MOTOR-VEHICLE VS. MAILBOX AND UTILITY POLE - On Nov.19 at approximately 1:33 p.m., Leo Limieux, 70, of Allen Street, Portland was traveling westbound on the East Haddam-Colchester Turnpike in East Haddam in the area of Stocking Lot Road, driving a 2012 Nissan Rogue. Police said that as Limieux attempted to maneuver his vehicle through a section of roadway where construction work was in progress, he struck a mailbox and utility pole. No injuries were reported. Limieux was issued a verbal warning for Failure to Drive in the Proper Lane, and the accident is under investigation.

FAILURE TO RESPOND TO AN INFRACTION - On Nov. 21 at approximately 8:45 a.m., Gabriel Soucie, 20, of O'Connell Road, East Haddam was located by Colchester Police at the Mobil Gas Station on Old Hartford Road in Colchester. Soucie was taken into custody without incident, pursuant to an active warrant for the above charge. He was later released on a $150 bond and given a court date of 12/9/14 at Middletown Superior Court.

DRIVING UNDER THE INFLUENCE OF ALCOHOL AND/OR DRUGS, SPEEDING AND OPERATING AN UNREGISTERED MOTOR-VEHICLE - On Nov. 28 at approximately 11:24 p.m., State Police initiated a motor-vehicle stop for Speeding on Route 434 in East Haddam. A subsequent investigation developed probable cause that the driver was operating under the influence of drugs. David Trotochaud, Jr., 43, address unknown, of East Haddam was taken into custody and charged with the above violations. Trotochaud was released on a $500 bond and scheduled to appear at Middletown Superior Court on 12/15/14.

MOTOR-VEHICLE VS. TREE - On Nov. 29 at approximately 4:58 a.m., Owen Blaschik, 26, of East Haddam-Moodus Road, Moodus was traveling westbound on the East Haddam-Colchester Turnpike in East Haddam, in the area of Falls-Bashan Road, operating a 2004 Honda Civic. Police said that Blaschik crossed over and traveled off the left side of the roadway and collided with a tree. He refused transport to an area hospital for evaluation and medical treatment, but was issued an infraction for Failure to Drive Upon the Right.

MOTOR-VEHICLE VS. TREE - On Dec.1 at approximately 7:15 a.m., Justin Goodreau, 25, of Waterhole Road, East Hampton was traveling eastbound on Mount Parnassus Road in East Haddam, in a 1998 Audi A-4. Police said that as Goodreau was turning left onto Schulman-Veselak Road, his vehicle traveled off the right side of the roadway, striking a tree. No injuries were reported. Goodreau was issued a written warning for Failure to Drive in the Proper Lane, and the accident remains under investigation.

East Haddam Police: Stuff-a-Cruiser Christmas Toy Drive

The East Haddam Police Officers and Resident State Troopers will host our 9th Annual "Stuff a Cruiser Toy Drive" this coming Saturday, December 6, 2014 from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.  The event will be held at the Nathan Hale Plaza located at 26 Falls Road, Route 149 in Moodus.

New, unwrapped toys are needed for children from infants to age 18. In addition to toys, donations of hats, gloves, scarves and socks are needed for children of all ages.  All donations will be distributed through East Haddam Youth and Family Service (EHYFS) to children within the community.

Lost & Found: Service Dog "Bella"

On Wednesday, November 12, 2014...

If you happen to be out hiking in the Salmon River State Forest, anywhere from the Day Pond State Park, Route 149  in Westchester to the Comstock Bridge, Route 16 (East Hampton) area, please keep an eye out for "Bella".

She's a black, grey and white Siberian Husky with brown eyes, and has a service dog ID tag attached to her collar.

Bella was lost on Wednesday, November 12, 2014 while out on a walk.

UPDATE:  Sunday, November 16, 2014...

After several days of searching for "Bella", a passing motorist had observed a dog wandering along the busy section of Route 149 in the area of the Westchester Plaza, and had recognized her from one of the many posters that had been placed in store windows.

The unidentified Good Samaritan was able to coax Bella into their vehicle, and then immediately called Christin on her cell phone to arrange the VERY happy reunion!

Bella had originally gone missing after a 6-mile hike at the Salmon River State Forest, and had darted away just as Christin was putting her into the car to leave the Day Pond State Park to head home.

Burglary, Larceny, Vandalism, Speeding and Failure to Comply with Emissions Inspections through 11-5-14

The East Haddam Police and the Connecticut State Police, Troop K in Colchester report the following incidents:

LARCENY & VANDALISM - On Nov. 3 at approximately 7:13 a.m., East Haddam Police received a complaint of several car batteries being stolen from vehicles that were parked at Moodus Auto on William F. Palmer Road in Moodus over the course of the weekend. A side window was shattered on one of the vehicles to gain entry. BURGLARY & LARCENY - On Nov. 5 at approximately 7:00 a.m., State Police received a complaint from a Shore Road, East Haddam resident. Sometime between Thursday, Oct. 30 and Wednesday, Nov. 5, unknown person(s) gained entry to the home by breaking a window on the front door. Police said that boxes of ammunition were stolen. SPEEDING & FAILURE TO COMPLY WITH EMISSIONS INSPECTION - On Nov. 5 at approximately 5:37 a.m., Damon Jansky, 21, of North Moodus Road, Moodus was issued a court summons for the above violations. Jansky was released on a Promise to Appear and scheduled to appear at Norwich Superior Court on 11/18/14.

Stolen Guns, Chainsaw, Leaf-Blower, X-Box and TV's, Vandalism, Keys Found, DUI and Failure to Appear in Court through 10-27-14

The East Haddam Police and the Connecticut State Police, Troop K in Colchester report the following incidents:

BURGLARY AND LARCENY - On Oct. 14 at approximately 12:53 p.m., East Haddam Police received a report from a Palmer Martin Road, East Haddam resident that their home had been broken into, sometime after 10:15 a.m. A large safe containing handguns was taken from inside the home. Anyone with information that could help police with this investigation is asked to contact Officer Jeff Rhoades at 860-891-8200.

LOST & FOUND - On Oct. 15 at approximately 10:00 a.m., a set of keys were found at the intersection of Palmer Martin Road & Route 82. One of the keys has been described as belonging to a Kia vehicle. If these keys belong to you, please contact Officer Jeff Rhoades at 860-891-8200 to claim them.

LARCENY - On Oct. 15 at approximately 6:50 p.m., Craig LeMay, 56, of Taftbrook Road, East Dover, Vermont, turned himself in to Troop K, based on an active warrant and was arrested and charged with 3rd-Degree Larceny. LeMay was held on a $10,000 bond and scheduled to appear at Middletown Superior Court on 10/16/14.

FAILURE TO APPEAR IN COURT - On Oct. 20 at approximately 10:00 p.m., Steven Mims, 36, of AP Gates Road, East Haddam was arrested and charged with 1st and 2nd-Degree Failure to Appear in Court, based on (2) active warrants. Mims was held on bonds totaling $12,500 and given a court date of 10/27/14 at Middletown Superior Court.

LARCENY FROM A MOTOR-VEHICLE - On Oct. 21 at approximately 3:18 p.m., East Haddam Police received a report from a Hopyard Road, East Haddam resident. An orange & white Husqvarna chainsaw (model#385-xp), Stihl back-pack leaf blower, orange and black (model#BR-600), Honda Inverter portable generator (camouflage color pattern), 22" Vizio LED-HD television set, Samsung 32" LED-HD television set, Samsung Blu-ray DVD player, Onkyo audio/video receiver, Microsoft X-Box high-speed game console (model#TF-141)  and some other miscellaneous items were taken from the bed of the victim's pick-up truck. DRIVING UNDER THE INFLUENCE OF ALCOHOL AND/OR DRUGS AND OPERATING A MOTOR-VEHICLE WITH A SUSPENDED LICENSE - On Oct. 24 at approximately 12:52 a.m., Michael Sadlier, 36, of Parkside Drive, Colchester was arrested and charged with the above violations. Sadlier was held on a $5,000 bond and was scheduled to appear later the same day at Middletown Superior Court.

VANDALISM AND CRIMINAL MISCHIEF - On Oct.24 at approximately 9:13 a.m., an employee of the East Haddam Fish & Game Club reported that their John Deere tractor had been damaged, as it was parked in the area of Wickham Road in East Haddam. MOTOR-VEHICLE ACCIDENT - On Oct. 27 at approximately 4:46 p.m., Darleen Tourville, 61, of Melrose Street, Glastonbury was stopped in the eastbound lane on Leesville Road in a 2009 Nissan Sentra, waiting to make a left-hand turn onto Neptune Avenue in Moodus. Michael Foster, 21, of Main Street, Ivoryton was traveling in the same direction on Leesville Road, behind Tourville in a 2013 Freightliner Sprinter. Police said that Foster did not realize that Tourville was stopped, and subsequently struck her vehicle from behind. Tourville was uninjured, however a passenger in her vehicle, Beverly Mosher, 87, of Jones Hollow Road, Marlborough complained of a minor leg injury. Mosher informed police that she intended to seek evaluation and treatment on her own. Foster was uninjured, but police found him to be at fault and issued him an infraction for Failure to Drive a Reasonable Distance Apart. Both vehicles had to be towed from the scene.

Vandalism and Criminal Mischief, Burglary and Motor-Vehicle Accidents through 10-8-14

The following information was provided by the East Haddam Police and the Connecticut State Police, Troop K in Colchester:

TWO-CAR COLLISION - On Oct. 2 at approximately 7:28 a.m., Mark Mieszkowicz, 52, of Falls Circle, Colchester was traveling southbound on Sipples Hill (Route 149) in Moodus in the area of Eli Chapman Road, operating a 2004 Chevy TrailBlazer. Michael Michalski, 42, of Falls-Bashan Road, Moodus was driving a 2003 Toyota Corolla in the northbound lane and crossed over the double-yellow center line, according to police, while navigating the sweeping corner of the roadway. Michalski's driver-side mirror reportedly struck Mieszkowicz's vehicle on the rear driver's side. No injuries were reported, and the accident is under investigation.

VANDALISM AND CRIMINAL MISCHIEF - On Oct. 3 at approximately 10:36 a.m., East Haddam Police were dispatched to a Gristmill Road, Moodus residence to investigate a complaint of unknown person(s) that had driven through the yard, causing damage to the lawn. MOTOR-VEHICLE VS. UTILITY POLE - On Oct. 7 at approximately 2:22 p.m., Joseph Bartucca, 61, of Warner Road, East Haddam was traveling southbound on Warner Road, just prior to Ridgebury Road in a 2014 Chevy Cruze. Police said that Bartucca drifted off of the right side of the road, striking a utility pole and snapping it in half. No injuries were reported, but the accident remains under investigation.

BURGLARY - On Oct. 8 at approximately 4:09 p.m., State Police received a complaint from a resident of O'Connell Road Extension, near the East Haddam-Colchester town line, regarding a burglary at their home. The incident was reported to have occurred at about 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, October 6th. The suspect is described as a white male, approximately 5'10" tall with a stocky-build and a full, dark-brown beard. Moodus Man Arrested after Engaging Glastonbury Police in Pursuit

On Wednesday, October 1, 2014 at approximately 1:50 p.m., Glastonbury Police were on routine patrol in the area of 2875 Main Street and the Cumberland Farms store in town.

A plain-clothes officer observed an individual sitting in their vehicle, and determined that person to be acting suspiciously and believed them to be involved in illegal narcotics activity, according to the report.

When the officer approached the vehicle and attempted to identify himself, the driver then reportedly drove off at a high rate of speed, out of the parking lot and onto Main Street, almost striking the officer in the process.

The suspect then engaged police in a brief pursuit along Main Street before the officer discontinued the chase.

The driver fled the area, but was taken into custody about an hour later when police were able to locate him at his residence.

Taylor Bauer, 23, of Eli Chapman Road, Moodus was arrested and charged with Interfering with an Officer, 1st-Degree Reckless Endangerment, Reckless Driving, Failure to Bring a Motor-Vehicle to a Full Stop when Signaled and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, related to Heroin use.

Bauer was held on a $25,000 court-set bond and scheduled to appear at Manchester Superior Court on 10/2/14.

Stolen Wallet, Chainsaws and Diesel Fuel, Credit Card Fraud and Motor-Vehicle Accident through 9-25-14

The East Haddam Police and the Connecticut State Police, Troop K in Colchester report the following incidents:

LARCENY AND CREDIT CARD FRAUD - On Sept.15 at approximately 4:29 p.m., East Haddam Police received a complaint from an employee of the Nathan Hale-Ray High School. The employee reported that their wallet had been stolen, and informed police that several transactions had taken place on a missing credit card in an adjacent town. MOTOR-VEHICLE ACCIDENT - On Sept.18 at approximately 11:04 a.m., Anita Ballek, 83, of Maple Avenue, East Haddam was traveling eastbound on Maple Avenue in a 2003 Chevy Venture van. Police said that as Ballek was attempting a left turn onto Route 151 (Town Street) she struck a 2004 Chevy C-1500 pick-up truck being operated by Joshua Thompson, 26, of Lamentation Drive, Berlin, as he had been traveling northbound on Route 151 and attempting to turn left onto Maple Avenue. No injuries were reported, and the accident remains under investigation.

LARCENY FROM A MOTOR-VEHICLE - On Sept. 23 at approximately 2:10 p.m.,  the East Haddam Police and Resident Troopers' Office received a complaint that (2) chainsaws had been stolen from a vehicle as it was parked in a driveway on William F. Palmer Road in Moodus. They have been described as being (1) "Stihl" brand, model #MS-3620, orange and white in color, and (1) Husqvarna brand, model #T-435, orange in color. LARCENY - On Sept. 25 at approximately 9:06 a.m., East Haddam Police were dispatched to the Banner Estates on Banner Road in Moodus, to investigate a complaint of diesel fuel being stolen from a tank on the property. Motor-Vehicle into the Water, Violation of Probation, Traveling Unreasonably Fast, Failure to Appear in Court, Improper Parking, DUI's and Burglary through 9-11-14

A pond along Daniels Road in East Haddam ( part of Succor Brook, also known locally as "the beaver pond") was the scene of a motor-vehicle accident on September 1, 2014 that resulted in a car being submerged in the water. The driver was able to escape uninjured from the driver's-side window and swam to shore, according to police.

The East Haddam Police and the Connecticut State Police, Troop K in Colchester report the following incidents:

DRIVING UNDER THE INFLUENCE OF ALCOHOL AND/OR DRUGS, FAILURE TO OBEY A STATE TRAFFIC CONTROL SIGNAL AND FAILURE TO APPEAR IN COURT - On Aug. 25 at approximately 7:37 p.m., police initiated a motor-vehicle stop on Route 149 and determined that the driver had a prior active arrest warrant pending. Douglas Wilson, 51, of Scenic View Drive, Deep River was arrested and charged with the above violations. Wilson was released on bonds totaling $1,000 and scheduled to appear at Norwich Superior Court on 8/26/14.

TRAVELING UNREASONABLY FAST - On Aug. 30 at approximately 1:35 a.m., Trevor Tuck, 26, of Haywardville Road, Colchester was traveling eastbound on Mount Parnassus Road in East Haddam in a 1993 Toyota pick-up truck. Police said that Tuck's vehicle left the roadway, struck a utility pole and rolled over. The truck came to a final rest in the travel portion of the roadway. No injuries were reported, but the truck was totaled and required towing. Police issued Tuck an infraction for Traveling Unreasonably Fast.

DRIVING UNDER THE INFLUENCE OF ALCOHOL AND/OR DRUGS, OERATION OF A MOTOR-VEHICLE WHEN A LICENSE IS REFUSED/SUSPENDED OR REVOKED AND IMPROPER PARKING - On Aug. 31 at approximately 5:36 a.m., police said that a Good Samaritan stopped their vehicle on Route 149 in East Haddam, in front of another vehicle that was stopped facing the wrong way in traffic to protect the occupant. Police said that Ryan Fraser, 32, of  Beach Road, Old Saybrook had been asleep at the wheel, and when he woke up, let his foot off of the brake which caused his vehicle to collide with the Good Samaritan's vehicle. Fraser was subsequently arrested and charged with the above violations. He was released on a $1,000 bond and given a court date of 9/17/14 at Middletown Superior Court.

MOTOR-VEHICLE INTO THE WATER - On Sept.1 at approximately 11:02 p.m., Eric Porter, Jr., 32, of Hebron was traveling eastbound along Daniels Road in East Haddam in a 2001 Audi S4 Sedan. Police said that an unknown vehicle, described as a Dodge Ram pick-up truck, swerved into Porter's path of travel, causing him to swerve to the right and enter the pond along Succor Brook. Although the vehicle was completely submerged, Porter was reportedly able to exit through the driver's side window and swim to shore, uninjured. The operator of the other vehicle evaded the scene. The case remains under investigation.

BURGLARY - On Sept. 4, East Haddam Police were dispatched to a North Moodus Road, Moodus residence to investigate a complaint of a screen door being pried open and unknown person(s) entering a porch area. FAILURE TO DRIVE UPON THE RIGHT - On Sept. 6 at approximately 9:35 p.m., Damon Jansky, 21, of Bruce Circle, Colchester was operating a 2003 Ford Ranger pick-up truck and was involved in a one-car crash on the westbound shoulder of Clark Gates Road in Moodus, according to State Police. No injuries were reported. Jansky was issued an infraction for Failure to Drive Upon the Right.

DRIVING UNDER THE INFLUENCE OF ALCOHOL AND/OR DRUGS AND FAILURE TO DRIVE UPON THE RIGHT - On Sept. 8 at approximately 12:21 a.m., State Police observed a vehicle traveling southbound on Route 149 in Moodus and subsequently initiated a motor-vehicle stop on William F. Palmer Road. An investigation developed probable cause that Nicholas Fischlein, 28, of 22 William F. Palmer Road, Moodus was operating under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs. Fischlein was arrested and charged with the above violations, then later released on a $1,000 bond. He was scheduled to appear at Middletown Superior Court on 9/23/14.

IMPROPER TURN - On Sept. 9 at approximately 10:04 p.m., police said that Zachary Brodeur, 25, of Taylor Road, Colchester was traveling southbound on Ackley Road in East Haddam, driving a 2006 Volkswagen JL2 in the area of Hall-Kilbourne Road. Brodeur reportedly then left the roadway, resulting in a collision. No injuries were reported. Police issued Brodeur an infraction for Making an Improper Right Turn.

VIOLATION OF PROBATION - On Sept. 11 at approximately 9:40 a.m., Donnie Valez, 25, of Bashan Road, East Haddam was taken into custody at his residence and charged for Violation of Probation, pursuant to an active warrant. Valez was transported to Troop K, processed and held on a $10,000 court-set bond, then transported to Middletown Superior Court on 9/12/14 for arraignment.

FAILURE TO APPEAR IN COURT - On Sept. 11 at approximately 11:36 a.m., Sean Barry, 24, of Town Street, Moodus turned himself in to Troop K for servicing of a warrant for (4) counts of Failure to Appear in Court. Barry was held on a $500 bond and scheduled to appear the next day at Middletown Superior Court.

Body Discovered in Moodus, Entering a State Park after Sunset, DUI, Larceny from a Motor-Vehicle and Assault through 8-26-14

The East Haddam Police and the Connecticut State Police, Troop K in Colchester report the following incidents:

ENTERING A STATE PARK AFTER SUNSET AND DRIVING UNDER THE INFLUENCE OF ALCOHOL AND/OR DRUGS - On August 9 at approximately 1:30 a.m., DEEP Environmental Officers on assignment at Hurd State Park observed a vehicle driving into to the main parking lot after park hours (park closes at sunset). When police approached the vehicle they said they detected the odor of alcohol and suspected that the operator had been consuming alcohol. The officers administered a field sobriety test, which the driver did not pass. David Wells, 56, of Palmer-Martin Road, East Haddam was subsequently arrested and charged with the above violations. He was transported to State Police Troop K barracks in Colchester for processing and administration of a breath test for alcohol.  Results of that test showed blood-alcohol levels in excess of allowable limits while operating a motor vehicle. Wells was later released on a $1,000 bond and scheduled to appear at Middletown Superior Court on 8/26/14.

LARCENY FROM A MOTOR-VEHICLE - On August 14 at approximately 8:02 p.m., State Police were dispatched to the Nathan Hale-Ray High School on School Drive in Moodus, to investigate a complaint of items stolen from a motor-vehicle. Tools, cash and prescription medication were reportedly stolen. DISORDERLY CONDUCT - On August 17 at approximately 2:00 p.m., Deborah Cassella, 49, of North Moodus Road, Moodus was arrested and charged with the above violation. Cassella was released on a $500 bond and given a court date of 8/18/14 at Middletown Superior Court.

MOTORCYCLE ACCIDENT - On August 20 at approximately 5:31 p.m., Andy Barter, 29, of Wood Acres Road, Colchester was traveling northbound on Town Street in the area of Banning Road in East Haddam, operating a 2011 Harley Davidson Night Rod Special. Police said that Barter failed to negotiate a curve in the roadway and lost control of the bike. He was transported to Middlesex Memorial Hospital for evaluation and treatment of minor injuries. Police issued Barter an infraction for Making an Improper Turn. 

BODY DISCOVERED IN MOODUS - On August 21 at approximately 12:18 p.m., an unidentified body was reportedly discovered in the woods along the Moodus River in the area of Grist Mill Road. State Police have confirmed that the victim's death had not been determined to have any criminal aspects, but declined to provide any further information.

LARCENY - On August 22 at approximately 2:54 p.m., East Haddam Police were dispatched to a Hillside Road, East Haddam residence to investigate a report that the dwelling had been entered and some undisclosed items had been removed. MOTOR-VEHICLE VS. TREE - On August 25 at approximately 5:39 a.m., Greg Carocari, 50, of Heritage Brook Drive, East Haddam was traveling westbound on Salem Road in East Haddam, just west of Alexander Road, operating a 2006 Chevy Trail-Blazer. Police said that Carocari lost control of the vehicle and struck a tree. No injuries were reported, but the vehicle had to be towed from the scene. Police issued Carocari a written warning for Traveling Too Fast for Conditions.

MOTOR-VEHICLE VS. UTILITY POLE - On August 26 at approximately 4:06 p.m., Madelaine (Joyce) Robichaud, 66, of Mount Parnassus Road, East Haddam was traveling along Town Street (Route 151) just north of Norwich Road (Route 82) in a 2008 Nissan Altima. Police said that Robichaud had fallen asleep at the wheel and collided with a utility pole. An eyewitness was also interviewed at the scene. No injuries were reported, but police issued Robichaud a written warning for Making an Improper Turn.

Connecticut State Police Prepare for Labor Day Weekend & School Opening: Enforcement Efforts to Continue as School Bells Ring

Increased Traffic Volume Expected...

Labor Day travel volume is typically heavy and the 2014 Labor Day weekend will be no exception. 

Connecticut State Police remind motorists to expect heavy traffic, exercise caution, and allow extra time to reach their destination. It is estimated that the number of people traveling by automobile for the holiday period will increase in New England compared to last year. 

Connecticut State Troopers will be concentrating on enforcement of drunken driving, speeding, safety belt, and distracted driving laws during the entire Labor Day Weekend. Troopers will utilize both traditional and nontraditional patrol vehicles on patrol searching for reckless and intoxicated drivers. Troopers will man sobriety checkpoints and targeted patrols to intercept drunk drivers. 

State Police Colonel Brian F. Meraviglia said, “As always, our Troopers will enhance safety of all roads and highways of Connecticut. We will be on alert for violators while we make every effort to protect all motorists and their passengers.” 

Enforcement efforts by the State Police will continue into the fall as more than half-a-million children return to school across Connecticut. With many children typically walking or riding the bus to school, State Police remind ALL drivers to be especially vigilant watching for pedestrians during before- and after-school hours. 

The afternoon hours are particularly dangerous for walking children – over the last decade nationally, nearly one-third of child pedestrian fatalities occurred between 3 and 7 p.m. Troopers ask all motorists to slow down in school zones. It is also important – and it’s the law – for all motorists to stop for school buses displaying flashing red lights. 

The fine in Connecticut for passing a standing school bus is $465. 

The State Police ask that all citizens be our eyes and ears all across the state over the Labor Day holiday.

The East Haddam Police and the Connecticut State Police, Troop K in Colchester report the following incidents:

MISUSE OF A MARKER PLATE, OPERATING WITH A SUSPENDED LICENSE AND OPERATING AN UNREGISTERED AND UNINSURED MOTOR-VEHICLE - On July 16, East Hampton Police issued Michael Robinson, 34, of White Sands Road, Moodus a motor-vehicle summons for the above violations. Robinson was scheduled to appear at Middletown Superior Court on 7/30/14.

VIOLATION OF PROBATION, BURGLARY AND LARCENY - On Aug. 5 at approximately 7:00 a.m., Joshua Giddings, 26, of Goose Hill Road, Chester, turned himself in to Troop K based on an active warrant for his arrest for the Violation of Probation. Giddings was held on a $5,000 bond and transported to the Middletown Superior Court. While at court, Giddings was re-arrested for separate charges related to another warrant which included (2) counts of 3rd-Degree Burglary, 5th-Degree Larceny and 6th-Degree Larceny. He was held on an additional $15,000 bond and was turned over to the Middletown Sheriff's Department for arraignment on the same day.

RECKLESS ENDANGERMENT AND BREACH OF PEACE - On Aug. 5 at approximately 1:15 p.m., Christopher Higbie, 29, of Neptune Avenue, Moodus turned himself into Troop K, based on an active warrant for his arrest for 2nd-Degree Reckless Endangerment and Breach of Peace. Higbie was released on a court-set $1,000 bond and scheduled to appear at Middletown Superior Court on 8/12/14.

MOTOR-VEHICLE VS. ROCK - On Aug. 8 at approximately 3:58 a.m., Wilfredo Ramirez-Delgado, 65, of Ridge Street, Waterbury was traveling eastbound on Route 434, just west of Hopyard Road in East Haddam, driving a 2000 Ford Focus. Police said that Delgado veered to the right and traveled off the side of the road, colliding with a rock. No injuries were reported, but Delgado was issued an infraction for Failure to Drive Upon the Right.

ASSAULT AND DISORDERLY CONDUCT - On Aug. 8 at approximately 9:00 p.m., Robert Wilson, 56, of Knoll Road, Moodus was arrested and charged with 3rd-Degree Assault and Disorderly Conduct. Wilson was released on a $2,500 bond and is scheduled to appear at Middletown Superior Court on 9/12/14.

LARCENY - On Aug. 11 at approximately 4:45 p.m., Marshall Allen, 26, of Banner Road, Moodus turned himself in to Troop K and was arrested based on an active warrant and charged with 6th-Degree Larceny. Allen was released on a $1,000 bond and given a court date of 8/26/14 at Middletown Superior Court.
