Failure to Appear in Court, Criminal Mischief, Criminal Trespass, Evading Responsibility, Disorderly Conduct, Burglary and Truck Vs. Overhead-Wires through 3-18-13


The following information has been provided by the East Haddam Police and the Connecticut State Police, Troop K in Colchester:

EVADING THE SCENE OF AN ACCIDENT, MAKING A RESTRICTED TURN, CRIMINAL MISCHIEF AND CRIMINAL TRESPASS - On March 12th at approximately 10:40 p.m., police were dispatched to the intersection of Route 149 and Mott Lane in Moodus to investigate the report of a motor-vehicle that had collided with a street sign and a snowbank. After further investigation, police report that the operator of the 1997 Nissan Quest, Samuel Austin Shepley, 21, of Triangle Drive, Moodus had originally fled the scene of the accident, but was later located and identified. Shepley was initially charged with evading responsibility and making a restricted turn.

During the process of investigating the accident, police received notification from Troop K dispatch regarding a security alarm that had been activated at the East Haddam Transfer Station on Nichols Road, which is located directly across the street from the location that the accident took place. After examining certain physical evidence from the scene, police determined that Shepley was also connected to a break-in at the transfer station, and he was additionally charged with 2nd-degree criminal mischief and 2nd-degree criminal trespass. He was arrested, taken into custody and processed at Troop K in Colchester. Police said that Shepley was unable to post bonds totaling $1,500, and was subsequently held and presented in court the next morning on March 13th at Middlesex Superior Court in Middletown.

TRUCK VS LOW-HANGING UTILITY WIRES - On March 13th at approximately 9:55 a.m., Michael Rinehart, 31, of Monroe Street, East Hartford was traveling eastbound on Petticoat Lane in East Haddam, operating a 2013 Kenworth T300 furniture delivery truck. Police report that the truck struck some low-hanging AT&T wires, causing some damage to the roof of the vehicle. The driver and the passenger, 45-year-old Juan Romero of Walsh Street, Bloomfield were uninjured, according to the report.

RESIDENTIAL BURGLARY - On March 14th, police received a complaint from a Norwich-Essex Turnpike, East Haddam residence, regarding a burglary that had taken place sometime during the daytime hours. Entry had been made into the home by breaking a pane of glass located in a rear door. Nothing was reportedly stolen, but the incident is under investigation.

FAILURE TO APPEAR IN COURT - On March 15th, Brittany Richards, 26, of AP Gates Road, East Haddam was arrested pursuant to a warrant, taken into custody and processed at Troop K in Colchester. Richards was released after posting a $500 bond and scheduled to appear at Middlesex Superior Court in Middletown on 3/26/13.

DISORDERLY CONDUCT - On March 18th, Stephen Day, Jr., 35, of Boston Post Road, Westbrook turned himself in to Troop K and was arrested, pursuant to a warrant for the above charge, related to a domestic violence investigation by police. Day was released on a $500 bond and given a court date of 3/19/13 at Middlesex Superior Court in Middletown.

RESIDENTIAL BURGLARY - On March 18th, police were dispatched to an East Haddam-Moodus Road, (Route 149) Moodus residence for the report of a home burglary. Unknown perpetrator(s) stole two jewelry boxes from the residence. The incident was reported to have taken place between the hours of 11:00 a.m. and 1:30 p.m., and police are investigating.
